Admitted

In the middle of the night Rosalie spiked a fever. I took her to the ER assuming that her neutrophils would be fine, they'd administer a broad antibiotic, and we'd go home.

But poor lady, she was neutropenic, so we ended up spending the whole night in the ER and then getting admitted onto the floor (the seventh floor, pediatric oncology) at 6am.

She's been at UCSF all day and will be there a couple more nights while they see if her blood cultures grow out. It was also handy to be in the hospital this morning because she needed a hemoglobin transfusion.

When I complete my honorary degree in medicine, I definitely want to be a pediatrician. Kids are just the coolest. Rosalie sits up straight and tall in the wee hours of the morning, watching Zoe's Dance Moves (a Sesame Street video, for those of you who are unfamiliar with Elmo's best friend, Zoe) as if it were perfectly normal to be sitting in a sterile ER room with an IV pole attached. I can just see Rosalie's house one day - neon lights in the bedroom, linoleum throughout, sensor faucets for better hygiene. And it must have an elevator - thank goodness kids think elevators are the coolest invention ever. It makes the trip up to the seventh floor so much more exciting. So yes, pediatrics is definitely the way to go.

Just read an article in Harvard Magazine about curing cancer and one of the top three findings consistant across all stuides reviewed was that positive attitudes in the patient, family and all those around have a positive impact on the outcome. Hang in there - you are doing more than your part in getting her through all this.
